Almost every emergency no-cool call we attend in July was preventable in May. Air conditioners are mechanical systems under seasonal stress, and they nearly always signal trouble before they stop entirely. The problem is that the early signals are easy to write off as "it's just getting old."
Here are the five that matter most, in the order we see them.
1. It runs longer to reach the same temperature
This is the earliest and most reliable warning, and almost nobody notices it because the house still gets cool.
If your system used to cycle off after 15 minutes and now runs for 25 to reach the same setpoint, something has changed — usually a low refrigerant charge from a slow leak, a dirty condenser coil, or a failing capacitor that's costing the compressor efficiency.
Why it matters: a system that runs 60% longer is drawing 60% more electricity and accumulating wear at the same rate. Catching it here is typically a $150–$300 fix. Left alone, low refrigerant eventually burns out a compressor, which is a $1,500–$2,500 repair on most systems.
A useful test: on a hot afternoon, note the time when the system starts and stops. Compare it to what you remember from last year. A meaningful change is worth a diagnostic.
2. Warm air, but the outdoor unit is running
If the outdoor fan spins and air comes out of the vents, but that air isn't cold, the system is circulating without cooling. Common causes:
- Low refrigerant from a leak in the coil or line set
- Frozen evaporator coil — often caused by restricted airflow from a clogged filter
- Failed compressor or a stuck contactor
- Thermostat calling for fan only rather than cool
The first thing to do is free: check your air filter. A filter that's been in place for six months can restrict airflow enough to freeze the indoor coil solid, which stops heat transfer entirely. Replace the filter, switch the system to fan-only for two hours to thaw the coil, then try cooling again.
If it recurs within a few days, you have a refrigerant or airflow problem that needs measurement instruments to diagnose.
3. Short-cycling
Short-cycling is when the system starts, runs for two or three minutes, shuts off, then restarts shortly after. It's one of the most damaging failure modes because compressor start-up draws several times the running current — frequent starts age the compressor far faster than continuous running.
Causes range from cheap to expensive:

That last row is worth dwelling on. An oversized air conditioner cools the air to the thermostat setpoint before it has run long enough to remove humidity, so it shuts off, the house feels clammy, and it starts again. This is why we run a Manual J load calculation on every installation quote rather than sizing by square footage — an oversized system is a permanent comfort problem you cannot repair your way out of.
4. New noises
Sound is diagnostic. Different noises mean genuinely different things:
- Grinding or metal-on-metal — worn blower or fan motor bearings. Stop running the system; continuing will usually destroy the motor.
- Loud buzzing at start-up — commonly a failing capacitor. Cheap to replace, and it's the single most common AC repair we make.
- Hissing or bubbling — a refrigerant leak. Needs attention promptly, both for cost and because refrigerant shouldn't be venting.
- Rattling — often just loose panel screws or debris in the outdoor unit. Frequently free to fix.
- Clicking that repeats without the system starting — a relay or contactor failing to close.
A capacitor caught early is a routine repair. A capacitor left until it takes the compressor with it is a different conversation entirely.
5. The energy bill climbed without a usage change
Compare this June to last June on your utility statement. Most utilities show a 12-month history right on the bill, and many normalize for weather.
A 20% or greater increase with no change in household habits means the system is doing the same work less efficiently. That's a measurable, quantified reason to have it looked at — and unlike the other four signs, this one is documented in writing by a third party.
What to check yourself before calling
Three things, all free, that resolve a meaningful share of the calls we get:
- Replace the air filter. Restricted airflow causes frozen coils, poor cooling and short-cycling. Do this first, always.
- Check the breaker. Air conditioners often have two — one for the indoor air handler and one for the outdoor condenser. Both need to be on.
- Check the thermostat. Fresh batteries, set to COOL rather than FAN, and set below the current room temperature.
If all three check out and the symptoms persist, it's a real fault and you need instruments to find it.
The economics of timing
Waiting has a real cost, and it isn't only the risk of a larger repair.
In May, we have open appointments and standard rates. In the third week of July, every HVAC company in the region has a multi-day backlog, emergency and after-hours rates apply, and you're choosing between waiting several days in the heat or paying a premium. The same capacitor is the same capacitor — the difference is entirely in when you called.
