Almost every filter box says "replace every 90 days." That number exists because it's simple to print, not because it's right for your house. Depending on your filter and your home, the honest answer ranges from 30 days to a full year.
Getting it wrong in either direction costs you money — and a restricted filter is the single most common root cause behind the "my system isn't cooling" calls we take.
Start with thickness
Filter thickness matters more than any other single variable, because a thicker filter has vastly more surface area to load up with debris before airflow is restricted.

If you're changing a 1-inch filter every 90 days as the box suggests, you're running restricted for the last month of every cycle. That's the most common mistake we see.
Then adjust for your household
Start from the thickness baseline above, then shorten it:
- One shedding pet — cut the interval by about a third
- Two or more pets — cut it roughly in half
- Someone with asthma or significant allergies — shorten by a third, and consider a higher MERV rating
- Ongoing construction or renovation — check monthly regardless; drywall dust will clog a filter in weeks
- A smoker in the home — shorten by half
- Vacation home or light occupancy — you can extend, sometimes considerably
Runtime matters too. A system running most of the day through a hot southern summer moves several times the air of one in a mild climate, and loads the filter proportionally.
The MERV trap
MERV measures how small a particle the filter captures. Higher numbers capture more. It's intuitive to assume higher is better — and for a lot of residential systems, that intuition is wrong.
- MERV 1–4 — captures large dust and lint. Protects the equipment, does little for air quality.
- MERV 5–8 — the residential sweet spot for most homes. Captures mold spores and pet dander with modest airflow resistance.
- MERV 9–12 — good for allergy sufferers. Verify your system can handle the static pressure.
- MERV 13–16 — captures bacteria and smoke particles. Frequently too restrictive for residential equipment.
Here's the problem. Residential blowers are designed for a specific static pressure range. A MERV 13 filter in a system designed for MERV 8 restricts airflow enough to cause exactly the failures you were trying to avoid: frozen evaporator coils in cooling, cracked heat exchangers in heating, and premature blower motor wear year-round.
If you want genuine high-efficiency filtration, the correct solution is a 4- or 5-inch media cabinet, which achieves a high MERV rating across far more surface area — so you get the filtration without the pressure drop. Retrofitting a cabinet costs a few hundred dollars and lasts the life of the system.
Check your equipment documentation, or ask your technician what static pressure your system is rated for, before going above MERV 11.
How to actually check it
Forget the calendar for a moment. Pull the filter out and hold it up to a bright light.
If you can't see light through it, it's overdue — regardless of how long it's been in. This one test is more reliable than any interval on any box, because it measures the thing that actually matters.
Two other habits worth adopting:
- Write the install date on the filter frame in marker when you put it in. Takes three seconds and removes all guesswork.
- Check monthly for the first year in a new home, then set your interval based on what you actually observe rather than what the packaging claims.
Which way is the arrow supposed to point?
Toward the furnace or air handler — that is, in the direction the air is flowing, which is from the return duct into the equipment.
Installing a filter backwards reduces its effectiveness and can cause the media to collapse against the frame under airflow. It's a genuinely common mistake and costs nothing to get right.
What a restricted filter actually does
This is the part worth understanding, because it reframes filter changes from housekeeping to equipment protection:
- In cooling: restricted airflow drops the evaporator coil below freezing. Ice forms, blocks airflow completely, and the system stops cooling. Meanwhile liquid refrigerant can return to the compressor — which is not designed to compress liquid.
- In heating: the heat exchanger can't shed heat into the airstream fast enough and overheats, tripping the high-limit switch. Repeated overheating cycles are a leading cause of heat exchanger cracks, which is both an expensive repair and a carbon monoxide risk.
- Year-round: the blower motor works harder against higher static pressure, drawing more current and wearing faster.
A filter costs between $5 and $40. A blower motor is several hundred dollars, and a cracked heat exchanger usually means replacing the furnace.
The short version
Buy the thickest filter your cabinet accepts, choose MERV 8–11 unless a technician has confirmed your system handles more, write the date on the frame, and hold it up to a light every month until you know your own interval.
That's it. It's the highest-return five minutes of home maintenance there is.
